An extraordinarily complex underground fungal network called mycelium is the largest organism on the planet, weaving its way through soil and teaming up with plant roots to deliver nutrients in exchange for plant sugars. It is the aforementioned mycelium from which the mushroom bodies sprout up and make their brilliant appearances.
